Step by step

  1. Download the file

    Open this page on your child’s device and tap “Get NixTier”. If the browser asks whether to keep the file, confirm with “Download” or “Download anyway”.

  2. Open the file

    Tap “Open” in the download notification – or open the “Downloads” folder in the “Files” app and tap “nixtier.apk”.

  3. Allow installing from this source

    The first time, Android says that installing unknown apps from this source isn’t allowed. Tap “Settings” and switch on “Allow from this source”. The exact wording depends on the manufacturer.

  4. Install

    Tap “Back” and then “Install”. If Google Play Protect shows a notice about an unknown app, you can continue via “More details” › “Install anyway”.

  5. Switch the permission off again (recommended)

    Settings › Apps › Special app access › Install unknown apps › your browser › off. NixTier itself stays installed.

  6. Get started

    Open NixTier, choose a pet, give it a name – done. For the parent area, hold “Parents” for two seconds.

Updates

NixTier checks for a new version itself when it starts. Your child only sees “New! Ask your parents”. In the parent area you tap “Download and install”. For the first update Android asks whether NixTier may install apps – allow it once, then Android confirms the installation. Pet, name and settings are kept.

Which permissions and why

  • Physical activityfor the step counter; the app only asks when your child opens “Move” for the first time.
  • Internetonly for updates and verifying an unlock code.
  • Cameraonly in the parent area, to scan the QR code from the purchase e-mail; it is only requested then. Images are not stored.
  • Install appsonly so that you can install updates in the parent area.

Verify authenticity (for the technically minded)

The APK is signed with our own key. Checksum of the current file and fingerprint of the certificate:
